What is their job title/ role in the construction project? Do you suggest contacting the developer of the construction project? Builder? Owner? Subcontractor? As a filmmaker you often get asked to bring a drone alongside your cinema camera and stuff and capture a couple shots. A reasonable way to price the drone as an extra ontop of your day rate as a camera operator/DP is to have a rate that includes emptying 3 batteries and then carge extra for every following battery. Price it in a way that it doubles your effective hourly rate. If you have a day rate that covers 8 hours of work and 1 battery lasts ~40m, flying a drone with 3 batteries being emptied should cost ~20% extra ontop of the daily rate. The equipment the camera and the drone itself obviously cost extra. For the camera thats about 1/20th of what was needed to purchase it in the first place, for the drone its 1/10th due to how much quicker it becomes outdated and how much more likely it is to completely crash and loose a drone than compared to a camera. Audio and lighting equipment should be 1/40th of what they initially costed you since they basically never become outdated and basically never break either.

I've been a drone pilot for a few years to supplement my architectural photography business and let's just say, this industry is in the toilet due to the Fed keeping interest rates high and reducing real estate borrowing power. 2024 has been my worst year in 19 years of photography so until interest rates come down, most commercial real estate projects are pretty much on hold until 2025 unfortunately.

Awesome video! You know, it's funny you mentioned offering a free demo to the potential client. I asked about doing that in the Real Estate Photography community as a way to get started in the industry and get your first client. They were all like Do Not Do That! I thought though, it was a solid point of departure to not only build a relationship but your portfolio.

Did you use Classification? You skipped an important step from showing all the canopy to the beautiful contours in a click. How would someone create a bare earth surface return in Civil 3d without the classification of the points? How would someone create a surface including roads, etc. without providing 3d breaklines (tringular irrergular networks are created as surfaces in C3D - breaklines are required). I've used drone data for over a decade but the drone data is becoming to large with the new drones today. Surveyors are providing clients with unclassified Point Clouds without any 3d breaklines along the surface. Drones and lidar are very usefull tools but the files for some projects are to big and unmanagable and surfaces with Breaklines should be provided by the Surveyor to the client. It's probably our fault to some degree because we could require certain deliverables in the SOW.

Awesome video but I wouldn't really recommend any of this for amateurs, this is more aimed towards a bigger commercial scale for certified pilots with insurance. But you could probably do real estate photography pretty easily. But to add to this, joining one of your local drone clubs may give you additional benefits as they may have agreements with the FAA or CAA (if you're in the UK) like commercial insurance allowing you to earn money without any additional certification and may even include certification in the pricing too, so it's worth checking out.

I wish you would break down the various parts of your offer and how you charge for them.
